Bridging Realities: Exploring the Intersection of Theatre, AI, and the Nation-State
As we navigate the intersections of AI, virtual reality, and storytelling, it prompts us to reflect on fundamental questions: How can we leverage these technologies to bridge cultural divides, foster understanding, and shape more inclusive societies? What role does storytelling play in reshaping traditional models of governance and creating a collective future that embraces diversity and interconnection? And how can we ensure that AI becomes a force for creating a more inclusive, diverse, and innovative society, serving as a good ancestor for future generations? These questions ignite our curiosity and drive us to seek innovative solutions, fostering social progress, cultural evolution, and a more equitable and sustainable future.

Last week, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote talk at the Theatre Forum Ireland. As I researched the essence of theatre and what makes it a unique experience, I was struck by a beautiful realisation. I noticed the parallels between the world of theatre and the immersive realm of virtual reality. Theatre has always possessed an extraordinary ability to transport us to different realms, evoke profound emotions, and challenge our perspectives. It breaks down the limitations of our physical reality, forging a deep sense of connection among the audience. In a similar vein, virtual reality seeks to recreate this immersive experience but within a digital landscape. With its virtual environments, interactive elements, and sensory feedback, virtual reality allows us to step into alternate realities and engage with narratives on a deeply personal level.
During breakfast on the final day of the conference, I had a thought-provoking conversation with one of the participants. We discussed the contrasting levels of support and difference in the lived experiences of individuals involved in the arts across "the island of Ireland." The stark contrast was moving. However, due to my currently limited insights into the matter, I choose not to delve into specific details at this time. Nevertheless, this conversation sparked a profound reflection on my initial realisation, that both theatre and virtual reality embody the essence of blurring boundaries, roles, responsibilities, power dynamics, and our perceptions of truth. This revelation has the potential to catalyse a fundamental shift in how we comprehend, create, and amplify narratives within relational ecologies. (Relational ecology is about how everything in a system is connected and depends on each other, stressing the need to care for these connections and think about how they affect everyone involved). Just as theatre transcends physical boundaries and connects people through shared experiences, AI technologies also have the potential to reshape our understanding of the nation-state by breaking down barriers and fostering connections. This idea prompted me to question the role of storytelling in shaping perceptions, values, and the future of our interconnected world.
With careful consideration, including the establishment of safeguards, regulations, and a commitment to fairness and transparency, AI holds the potential to revolutionise society. Much like the climate crisis reaching a tipping point, where reversing the damage becomes increasingly challenging, we can still alter our mindsets and behaviours to mitigate further harm. Just as we strive to address the urgent environmental challenges, we must approach the development and deployment of AI with a sense of responsibility and an unwavering dedication to ensuring its benefits are widespread and its risks are minimised.
A few weeks ago, I spoke at VentureFest North-East and was fortunate to have shared the stage with Dr. Noura Al Moubayed, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University, she brought attention to the toxicity score associated with many foundational AI models. This alarming revelation emerged when Dr Al Moubayed shared that these models flag the mention of 'mental health' as toxic, perpetuating derogatory implications. Such a discovery is particularly concerning as more individuals share their experiences and advocate for mental health. Dr. Al Moubayed's concern is that this toxicity score could set back the discourse on mental health by 20-30 years, impeding progress in this crucial area. As the Chair of Mental Health First Aid England, I find this revelation deeply troubling and utterly unacceptable. It emphasises the significance of collectively and transparently examining and addressing biases embedded within AI systems, rather than doing this behind closed doors.
In the context of AI, it's essential to acknowledge its deep integration into our lives, much like a mycelium network. Just as the interconnected threads of a mycelium network support plant growth and promote ecosystem health, we can harness the interconnected nature of AI to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and enhance the well-being of individuals and society as a whole. Recognising the irreversible presence of AI, we have a crucial responsibility to shape its trajectory with ethical considerations at the forefront. This includes addressing biases, ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI algorithms and decision-making processes. Through interdisciplinary collaborations, diverse perspectives, and open dialogue, we can strive for an inclusive and equitable AI-driven future.
Much like the vibrant discussions at the Theatre Forum in Ireland last week, the integration of AI into our lives demands thoughtful exploration and dialogue. Engaging in conversations about the potential and implications of AI, we can collectively navigate its complexities and explore its potential impact on concepts like the nation-state, while upholding ethical principles and promoting inclusivity.
At the intersection of theatre as virtual reality and the impact of AI on the nation-state, the role of storytelling emerges as profound. Recognising this convergence, we can harness technology as a relational ecology, amplifying its power to shape a more empathetic, interconnected, and equitable society. Theatre, with its captivating storytelling medium, becomes a catalyst for cultural understanding and social progress within the dynamic landscape of the nation-state. Embracing the immersive essence of virtual reality and ethically and openly leveraging the analytical capabilities of AI, we unlock transformative possibilities in storytelling, bridging divides, fostering dialogue, and reshaping complex concepts such as the nation-state into inclusive and interconnected models that reflect our collective aspirations.
However, realising this vision requires addressing the challenges linked to AI. By prioritising fairness, transparency, and safeguards, we can ensure that AI benefits everyone without perpetuating discrimination or harmful biases. Cultivating a culture of responsible AI use calls for a shift in mindset and behaviour, encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations, diverse voices in decision-making, and open dialogue on the ethical implications of AI. Furthermore, we must consider the environmental impact of AI and promote sustainable computing practices. We can then address issues of diversity, inclusion and belonging, developing policies and services that are equitable and responsive to the needs of all individuals. These themes and concerns resonate with the discussions held at The Theatre Forum Ireland.
However, unlocking this transformative potential relies on the genuine dedication of these stakeholders to prioritise the well-being and dignity of all beings, rejecting exploitative colonial practices and upholding moral principles. This sentiment resonated deeply during my discussion about the contrasting experiences in the arts across the "island of Ireland." It highlighted the importance of fostering inclusive and equitable systems that honour diverse voices and narratives.
Together, let's reimagine the boundaries of possibility and forge a path towards a harmonious coexistence of technology and humanity.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
